Two sites that look the same
The practice site is a full copy of the software, filled with sample stories. It has its own content, so nothing you do there reaches the live site or its readers. Always check which one you are on: the tab of the practice Studio reads Global Africa Media (TRAINING, not the live site).
Safe to do on the practice site
- Write, publish, correct and delete stories
- Rearrange the homepage, menu and pages
- Send a story idea through the Contribute form
- Build and test newsletter editions
- Open every tool and click every button
Do not do on the practice site
- Keep real work there: the team can reset it at any time
- Type real personal data or upload private files
- Expect emails: none are ever delivered from here
- Share its address with readers or partners
| What | Practice site | Live site |
|---|---|---|
| Content | Sample stories, free to change | Real stories read by the public |
| Search engines | Kept out | Indexed |
| Emails and newsletters | Never delivered | Sent to real readers |
| Your sign-in | Your own Sanity account, the same on both sites. Your role is the same on both too. | |
| Translations | Made automatically after you publish in English. Give them a minute. | |
Some tabs depend on your role. Contributors write drafts and see the content tools only. Editors publish. Administrators and developers also see Analytics and Newsletter. If a tab is missing, your role does not include it.
Learn by doing, in four days
Each exercise takes 15 to 30 minutes. Open it, watch the matching videos if you like, then do the steps on the practice site.
1Read the site as a readerSee what readers see before you change anything
- Open the practice site. When the privacy banner appears, try Customise, then choose Reject all.
- Switch the language to Arabic and notice that the whole page turns right to left. Switch back to English.
- Open a section from the menu, then open a story. Find the author, the date and the share buttons.
- Scroll to the footer. Find the newsletter sign-up, the cookie settings and the Contribute link.
Done when you can name the parts of the homepage from top to bottom.
2Write and publish a storyFrom a blank page to a live story
- Open the practice Studio. In the Content tab, click the plus button at the top and choose News story.
- Write the headline in English, under 140 characters. Write a summary of one or two sentences, under 300 characters.
- Upload a picture you are allowed to use. Use the crop button to set the hotspot, the part that must stay visible. Fill in the description for screen readers.
- Write the body: one heading, two paragraphs and a link to another story.
- Pick a section. Leave Authors empty, so the story is signed by the Newsroom.
- Click the validation icon at the top. A red message blocks publishing. A yellow message is only advice.
- Click Publish. Open the section on the practice site and find your story. Wait a minute, then switch to French to see the translation.
Done when your story shows on the practice site in English and in French.
Do not change the web address of a story after its first publication. Old links would break.
3Correct a published factNever change a fact in silence
- Open your story. Change one fact in the text.
- Open the group named After publication: corrections and add a correction with today's date and a note in English that says what changed.
- Publish. Reload the story on the practice site and read the correction box at the foot of the article.
Done when the correction box shows the date and your note.
4Put a story on the homepageThe homepage fills itself, you only step in to choose
- Open the menu with three dots on your published story and choose Feature this story.
- Open the Homepage document and check that your story is now the big story. Publish the Homepage.
- Reload the practice homepage. Then set Keep my choices until to a time a few minutes ahead and see the page return to the newest stories on its own.
- Add one In focus link to a section, with a text under 40 characters.
Done when your story leads the practice homepage.
Feature this story only works on a story that is already published, and nothing moves until you publish the Homepage.
5Create a section and an authorThe two things every story depends on
- Create an author with a name, a short role and a short biography. Publish it.
- Open your story, add this author, and publish the story again. Check the author line on the site.
- Create a section named Practice with a one-line description. Move a story into it and publish.
- In Sections, drag the new section to another place in the list. The menu follows the new order.
Done when the new section shows in the menu with your story inside.
A section with no published story stays out of the menu. A section can only be deleted when no story uses it.
6Edit a page and the site settingsFixed pages, languages and public addresses
- Open the Pages list and open the About page. Add a Text block, publish, and check the page on the site.
- Look at the tags that show whether each translation is up to date.
- Open Site settings. Find the languages, the public email addresses and the social accounts. Change nothing you would not change on the live site.
Done when you can say where each public email address appears.
7Answer a reader's story ideaFrom the Contribute form to a decision
- On the practice site, open Contribute from the footer and send a story idea. Use a made-up name and an address of your own.
- In the Studio, open Pitches, then New. Open your pitch and read what the reader sent.
- Write a line in Desk notes, the only field you can edit.
- Use the three dots to create an article draft from the pitch, then accept the pitch.
Done when the pitch is under Accepted and a draft story exists.
Accept and Decline send one short standard email that never repeats what the reader typed. The practice site cannot deliver email, so nothing arrives. Do not attach real files.
8Prepare a newsletter editionSubscribers, editions, ads and reports
- Open the Newsletter tab, then open the manager. Look at the Overview and Subscribers pages.
- Add a subscriber with a made-up address. On the live site, only add real people who already agreed.
- Open Editions and start an edition from this week's stories. Write the subject and the introduction.
- Add a Story block by searching a headline. Add an Ad slot block. Move a block with the arrows.
- Open the preview, then send a test. Always send a test before a real send.
- Open Reports and Ads and read what each figure means.
Done when you have a preview you would be happy to send.
The practice site cannot deliver email, so no test message reaches your inbox. Use the preview to check the edition.
9Read the analyticsWho reads, what, and how they arrive
- Open the Analytics tab and click Open analytics.
- Change the period from 7 days to 30 days and read how it compares with the period before.
- Open the Right now section, then browse the practice site in another tab. Your visit should appear within a few seconds.
- Open Traffic sources and Content. Export one table as a CSV file.
Done when you can name the three most viewed pages.
Fifteen short videos, 43 minutes in all
Voice-over and subtitles are in English. Use the subtitle button in the player if you prefer to read along. Videos 14 and 15 use explanation cards, so no login or key is ever shown. The screens were recorded on a demo copy of the site.
First steps for the usual problems
Write down what you did and what you saw before you ask for help. It saves a round trip. Ask the site manager first. For a problem inside one service, its own support can help: Sanity, Vercel or Resend.
| Symptom | What to do |
|---|---|
| My change is not on the site | Wait a minute and reload. If it never updates, tell the site manager. |
| A translation is missing | New stories show in English for a short while. If a translation never comes, tell the site manager. |
| The newsletter did not go out | A scheduled edition leaves through a task that runs every five minutes. Open the edition and click Send now, or tell the site manager. |
| Emails do not arrive | Check the spam folder first, then ask the site manager to check the sending domain. The practice site never delivers email. |
| A file was refused | Over 3.5 MB, a macro, an object, a suspicious link, encryption, or the antivirus service is unavailable. The reader can still send the pitch without the file. |
| I cannot see Analytics or Newsletter | Your role does not include them. Ask the site manager to check your role. |
Keep logins private. Use a password manager and one account per person. Never share passwords or keys by email or chat. A simple editorial rule works well: contributors write, editors publish, and no story goes live before a second person has read it.
